Save More on Car Insurance

Simple ways to trim your premium without giving up coverage you actually need.

Most people we talk to assume their car insurance bill is what it is. It usually is not. Rates are built from a stack of small factors, and a few of them are worth revisiting once a year.

Here is where Maine drivers actually find money, in the order we check it.

Start with the discounts you already qualify for

Discounts are the easiest win because nothing about your coverage changes. You are just getting credit for things that are already true.

  • Bundling auto with home or renters, which is almost always the biggest single reduction
  • Paying the policy in full instead of monthly
  • Going paperless and setting up automatic payments
  • A clean driving record over the last three to five years
  • Vehicle safety features, anti-theft systems, and daytime running lights
  • Student, military, and federal employee discounts if they apply to your household

Any agent can run this list with you in about ten minutes. If nobody has asked you these questions since you signed up, something on this list is probably being left on the table.

Look hard at your deductible

Your deductible is the part you pay before coverage kicks in. Raising it from 500 dollars to 1,000 dollars lowers your premium, sometimes noticeably.

The catch is real, though, so be honest about it. Only raise your deductible to a number you could actually write a check for tomorrow without it wrecking your month. A lower premium is not a bargain if a February fender bender turns into a problem you cannot pay for.

Do not cut liability to save twenty dollars

This is the one place we push back. Liability is what protects your savings and your house if you cause a serious accident. Comprehensive and collision protect your car. Liability protects everything else you own.

Maine's minimum required limits are low relative to what a real accident costs. Trimming liability is usually the worst possible place to find savings, and it is the change people regret most.

Tell us when your life changes

Rates follow your life, and a lot of the changes work in your favor:

  • You moved, especially out of a higher density area
  • You retired or started working from home, so you drive far fewer miles
  • A teen driver went off to school without a car
  • You paid off the car, which may change whether full coverage still makes sense
  • You added a policy we could bundle with this one

None of that updates on its own. Someone has to call.

The honest summary

The savings almost never come from one dramatic move. They come from a bundle discount, a deductible that fits your actual finances, and a policy that reflects your life this year instead of the year you signed up.

If it has been more than a year since anyone reviewed yours, call the office. We will go line by line with you and tell you straight whether there is anything to find.
